Brought to life by a Piëch founder with Porsche blood

Anton Piëch (son of Volkswagen legend Ferdinand Piëch) just teased Piëch Automotive’s new electric sportscar, the Mark Zero, which will charge up to 80% in a downright stupefying four minutes and 40 seconds. The car will make its debut at the Geneva Motor Show this week.

Many questions will focus on that insane battery claim. It’s built by Hong Kong-based Desten Group, and instead of being placed under the floor, as in most e-vehicles, the batteries are situated in the central tunnel and above the rear axle — helping facilitate a process that keeps the cell from overheating during charging. Not to mention, once 100% charged, the car commands a full 311 miles of range.

At this point, the claim is simply that. A claim. Keep in mind the world’s current fastest charger promises 120 miles over eight minutes of charging. Could Piëch really obliterate that number? Unlikely. But this is some genius marketing to get people to give the sportscar a second look and take note more obvious, proveable facts. Both A) the weight: it’s kept under 4,000 pounds and B) its modular capabilities: the car is designed to be updated, with the capacity for new fuel cells, powertrains or batteries to be added to the design in the future.
