Having the ability to endlessly charge a device — much less a two-ton automobile — by simply plugging it in to a wall out is one of the greatest conveniences known to modern man.
But not quite convenient enough, apparently.
Because GM is currently hard at work on a wireless charging system for electric vehicles.
Developed in conjunction with wireless power firm WiTricity, the prototype platform would allow drivers to simply park and charge wherever the system is implemented (ideally in both public and commercial parking lots, according to the company).
Made to work with battery EVs and extended-range EVs that are already equipped with plug-in charging capabilities, the system would use a “floor pad” under the pavement to provide power.
“Wireless charging for EVs, based on industry standards, is inevitable as we move toward a future of self-driving and autonomous vehicles,” said WiTricity CEO Alex Gruzen. “This project brings us one step closer to realizing our vision of a world powered wirelessly.”
Since that would be a world where we don’t have to remember our chargers, we’re all for it.
