You wouldn’t think that a band with a founding member nicknamed “Pigpen” would be likely to inspire a deodorant, but if there’s one thing we’ve learned about 2020 thus far, it’s that all bets are off. And so this week brings the news that the Grateful Dead have lent their name and aesthetic to a new line of organic deodorant.
The news comes via Peter Helman at Stereogum, who notes that the new deodorant is a collaboration with North Coast Organics. At present, the line of deodorants includes 5 distinct scents, many of which have names hearkening back to the band’s heyday and aesthetics. This includes Workingman’s (with cedar and juniper scents) and Skull & Roses (with hints of lavender and rose).
In a post on North Coast Organics’ site, the company’s founder describes his own experience with the Grateful Dead’s music:
The Grateful Dead might not be the first group that comes to mind when launching a deodorant, but the scent combinations here do sound appealing. And the timing of this around Father’s Day seems less than coincidental; as last-minute gifts go, it’s a solid bet.
