Heinz Ketchup Calls on Hot Dog and Bun Makers to End Inequality in Size of Packs

Why do hot dog wieners come in packs of 10 while buns are delivered in packs of eight?

When it comes to hot dogs, the only number anyone has spent any time thinking about recently is 76 — the number of hot dogs and buns Joey Chestnut ate in 10 minutes at this year’s Nathan’s Famous International Hot Dog Eating Contest to win the event for the 14th time in the last 15 years.

To coincide with National Hot Dog Month and the launch of the company’s new flagship Mont Royal factory in Montreal, Heinz Ketchup is bringing a pair of other hot dog-related digits to the forefront: eight and 10.

The former is the number of rolls that come in a standard package of buns, while the latter is the number of dogs that come in a typical pack of wieners. Clearly, there’s a disconnect there, and Heinz Ketchup has stepped up to try and bridge it with the launch of the Heinz Hot Dog Pact.

“Hot dog wieners come in packs of 10. Hot dog buns come in packs of eight. Why?” the pact website asks. “As the condiment that has been bringing foods together for over 150 years, we’ve decided enough is enough. That’s why we started the Heinz Hot Dog Pact. We’re calling on Big Bun and Big Wiener companies to find the answer to this hot dog packaging mismatch, once and for all. We need your signatures more than ever. Let’s change hot dog history together.”

To put an end to the inequality in package sizing, Heinz Ketchup is calling on Canadians and Americans to sign a petition uniting wiener and bun manufacturers to finally sell equal packs.

“We’ve seen our fans through social media express their outrage about the bun-to-hot-dog ratio issue for years, and we know there must be a better way. We believe that the time for change is now and we are hopeful,” said Kraft Heinz Company associate director Daniel Gotlib. “As the iconic condiment that has been making hot dogs complete for over 150 years, we saw an opportunity to champion this issue on behalf of hot dog lovers across North America and help show manufacturers why they need to put an end to unequal packs.”

With the petition already close to being topped with 5,000 signatures, we relished the opportunity to add ours.
