Whether cooked in a iron skillet or sous vide-style precision cooker, every man over the age of 12 should know how they like their steak.
That’s where Cook My Meat comes in.
It’s a visual simulator for cooking steak built a few years ago by a trio of MIT students that seems to be making the rounds again after vlogger DONG posted this video over the weekend.
The website allows you to load in stats about your steak (thickness, starting temperature) and then punch in your preferred cooking time. Once that’s done, the simulation creates a colorful visual rendering of what the interior of your meat looks like throughout the cooking process.
All in: a very nifty, color-coded visualization tool.
The site also allows you to compare what two pre-loaded cooking methods look like (e.g. four minutes a side vs sear then cook low) and you can choose to simulate cooking tuna or turkey instead of steak, not that there’s anything wrong with that.
Cook My Meat’s creators do note the simulation is an estimate and that stove temperatures, pan types and meat consistency will vary so it’s always best to use a meat thermometer for safety.
