The cast and crew of It divulge more background on the making of Pennywise the Clown in a new featurette from Warner Bros.
“He’s unpredictable, and it was something that got my attention immediately,” director Andy Muschietti said of Bill Skarsgård, the actor who portrays the infamous creature. And that’s exactly what Skarsgård was going for when he took on the role.
“I wanted to create something unsettling,” Skarsgård said. “This feeling that you never know what’s going to happen when the clown is around.”
Producer David Katzenberg noted that Muschietti kept the children in the film away from Pennywise for as long as possible — not to protect them, but to make sure their on-screen reactions when they finally saw him was as realistic as possible. Luckily Hollywood didn’t have to feel the same type of tangible fear; the adaptation butchered box office records, setting the largest opening for a horror movie in cinema history.
