FYI: Mr. Bean Is a Car Guy, and His Personal Race Car Is for Sale

Give Rowan Atkinson and his '64 Ford Falcon the respect they deserve

There are a few celebrity gearheads who are known almost as much for their love of cars as their pop culture contributions — people like Jay Leno, Jerry Seinfeld and Dax Shepard. For these three, it’s partially because those two worlds intersect and they’re very public about their hobby. Then there are those whose on-screen personas directly contradict the image we have of the grease-smeared car guy, but who nonetheless spend their free time behind the wheel, people like Rowan Atkinson.

You’ll likely be most familiar with Atkinson for his character Mr. Bean, though the prolific British actor has been in everything from a James Bond movie to The Lion King to Love Actually. But when he’s not filming from a chair strapped to the top of a Mini, he’s collecting high-priced cars from McLaren to Rolls-Royce and racing vintage cars.

In an episode of U.K. show Top Gear from a decade ago, Atkinson talked about one of his race cars in particular, a 1964 Ford Falcon. “It’s a big sort of 4.7-liter V8 and very, very light,” he told host Jeremy Clarkson, adding that the vehicle has “a certain floppiness to it.” Now, that car is headed to auction via Silverstone Auctions, where it is estimated to sell for about $76,000 to $89,800, as Silodrome detailed.

“Atkinson’s Falcon was professionally built to FIA standards (Class CT10 – period F 1962 – 1965) meaning it’s eligible to compete in the Masters, HSCC, HRDC, and all pre-’65 FIA Series in Europe,” Silodrome wrote. “Atkinson himself has raced the car at the Snetterton, Chimay in Belgium, the Silverstone Classic, and the Goodwood Revival Meeting in the St. Mary’s Trophy.”

And in case you’re worried this may be right-hand drive because of its British owner, that is not the case.

While a Ford Falcon may not be the first car you think of when it comes to historic racing, this one has certainly proved its worth time and time again at the hands of a famous and competent driver (in the Top Gear clip, make sure to watch Atkinson’s lap in a Kia Cee’d).
