Last year brought the news that ESPN was producing a docuseries about Tom Brady’s career in football, to be titled Man In the Arena. In interviews, producer Gotham Chopra has been adamant about Man In the Arena being a different kind of docuseries than The Last Dance. Now, ESPN has released the first trailer for the project, which is set to debut on ESPN+ this fall, to offer a better look at what to expect.
Deadline’s Bruce Haring reports that the series will focus on Brady’s Super Bowl appearances. Based on the description, the series sounds like it’s focusing on small moments within games in order to show their cumulative effect.
The trailer itself spans many years in Brady’s career, featuring him as a young player before joining the NFL and showing the beginnings of his career with the Patriots. There’s a blend of interviews and archival footage — about what you’d expect from a sports documentary.
This isn’t the first time Brady and Chopra have worked together. Chopra was the creator of Tom vs. Time, a docuseries that aired on Facebook Watch in 2018. Decider’s Jade Budowski praised the series when it aired, calling it “a fascinating look behind the curtain of an image we see pretty much everywhere.”
The Brady/Chopra partnership isn’t just for this series — they’re also co-founders, along with Michael Strahan, of the media company Religion of Sports. Last year, the company completed a $10 million round of fundraising. Given the scale of this series, Man In the Arena might be their highest-profile project yet.
