Three years after they were first announced, the third iteration of Tesla’s Solar Roof has made its debut. On Friday, Elon Musk announced the new version of this high-tech material, TechCrunch reports. According to Musk, some installations are already underway, with a weekly production goal of 1,000 roofs total.

What’s different in this version? For starters, Tesla is making it easier to see how much buying this technology would cost. Tesla’s website has an estimator tool present, and also includes some general data.

The “average home” cited there is 2,000 square feet, with 10kW solar. A standard solar roof is estimated to cost $33,950, which compares favorably to estimates of a similar cost for a roof alone. One of the advantages of this new technology, TechCrunch reports, is that Tesla’s solar panels pull double duty as a roof in their own right.

Musk also said that while it’s hiring and training specialized installers at first, the plan is to ultimately expand installations to any third-party contractors as well. On the call, he and the Tesla team discussed how they focused on getting the installation time down to where it’s faster than installing traditional shingles, plus solar panels on top of that.

And for those concerned with durability, that’s also covered. TechCrunch reports that “[t]he tiles and roof installation carry a warranty of 25 years, which includes their protective weatherization (including 130 MPH wind resistance) and their power generation capability.”

One of the more favorable reasons to opt for solar panels, if you’re based in the US, is a tax credit — and the nature of that credit is something to keep an eye on, as it can shift over time. Will Tesla’s new version of their solar roofs revolutionize home power? It might do just that.
