Though it happened more than five months ago, ESPN has obtained information that a woman died after being struck in the head by a foul ball at Dodger Stadium in late August.
California woman Linda Goldbloom, 79, died on August 29 from an “acute intracranial hemorrhage” and a “history of blunt force trauma,” according to an LA County Medical Examiner’s report.
ESPN was able to link the death to a foul ball that came off the bat of San Diego Padres outfielder Franmil Reyes in the top of the ninth inning during a game on August 25 and hit Goldbloom in the head.
Though all 30 MLB teams extended the protective netting areas behind home plate and both dugouts, the ball Reyes hit went just over the protected area and struck Goldbloom.
She was not using her cellphone at the time, a common occurrence at MLB games.
“Ushers came down and asked if she was all right, and she said no, then EMT came and rushed her to the hospital – she threw up in the ambulance,” her daughter, Jana Brody, told ESPN. “My mom went to the game and never came home. People need to be aware, and we’d really like them to be protected in the future.”
In MLB’s 150-year history, there have been two previous reported instances of fans dying after being struck by balls hit into the stands.
