Bill Gates recently expressed both optimism about the world’s fate and concern about Trump’s “America First” doctrine to The Atlantic’s Jeffrey Goldberg. Gates maintained his stance that the world is getting better, but is worried about the globe’s unpreparedness in the face of a pandemic. Gates made a plea for the US to spend more on global health initiatives abroad, as he fears that a pandemic could level large parts of the under-resourced world. Despite Trump’s proposed cuts to global health aid, Gates said he would still be willing to meet with the president to discuss several public health issues.
