By now, it feels like everyone under the sun has weighed in with a hot take on the GameStop stock controversy (if you’re not up to speed, we’ve got an explainer for you here), and that includes none other than Jon Stewart, who finally created a Twitter account (@jon_actual) for himself in order to weigh in.
The former Daily Show host expressed support for the Redditors who have sent Wall Street into a frenzy, writing, “This is bullshit. The Redditors aren’t cheating, they’re joining a party Wall Street insiders have been enjoying for years. Don’t shut them down…maybe sue them for copyright infringement instead!! We’ve learned nothing from 2008. Love StewBeef”
After his first-ever tweet raked in over 320,000 likes, the comedian followed up with a second tweet thanking everyone for their support and warning them not to get their hopes up about his new social media account. “Thanks for the warm welcome!” he wrote. “I promise to only use this app in a sporadic and ineffective manner.”
Stewart’s former Daily Show co-star Stephen Colbert happened to be one of those people responsible for his “warm welcome.” After seeing Stewart’s original tweet, the Late Show host quote-tweeted him and added, “Well, one thing changed since 2008- a friend of mine joined Twitter.”
