Restaurants in Westchester are eligible for coveted Michelin star status for the first time this year. The famed restaurant guide announced the expansion of its New York listing last week, Eater reported.

Following in the footsteps of the company’s San Francisco guide, which includes top-tier restaurants throughout the greater Bay Area, Michelin has expanded the 2020 New York guide to include eateries outside the city’s five boroughs for the first time by adding the Hudson Valley’s suburban Westchester County. The inclusion of the area including Yonkers, White Plains, Dobbs Ferry and Tarrytown comes as a testament to the increasing suburbanization of the prestigious Michelin listings, and perhaps as a further snub to Los Angelenos whose city still doesn’t have a list of its own.

The guides’ international director called the expansion into Westchester “a natural progression” in a press release, adding that Michelin inspectors had been “particularly impressed” by the quality of the area’s offerings during recent visits.

As Eater noted, this expansion of the New York guide is particularly significant for chef Dan Barber’s Blue Hill location at Stone Barns. Widely considered one of the nation’s best restaurants, fans have long questioned the location’s lack of recognition from the guide. Barber’s Greenwich Village location already boasts one star.

Michelin dropped its Bib Gourmand picks for the city and surrounding area on Monday, featuring eight picks from the guide’s expanded Westchester County coverage. The suburban destinations receiving the nod include The Cookery in Dobb’s Ferry, Eugene’s Diner & Bar in Port Chester, Café Alaia in Scarsdale, Elmsford locations RaaSa and Shiraz Kitchen, New Rochelle locales Dubrovnik and Maria Restaurant, as well as Westchester’s Southern Table.

The stars will be released Monday, October 21.
