After living in the country’s cramped embassy in London for five and a half years, WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange is now an Ecuadorian citizen, The Guardian is reporting.
Assange was officially granted citizenship last month in what the Guardian calls “an attempt to resolve the political impasse over his continued presence in the UK.” Assange refused to surrender to the authorities in 2012 after Sweden attempted to extradite him back to the country to face accusations of sexual misconduct, including rape. The Ecuadorian embassy granted him asylum during that time.
The Guardian also reports that Assange believes the U.S. is seeking his arrest under a sealed indictment.
