You can now add “women’s rights activist” to pop star Taylor Swift’s growing résumé.
After giving explicit, no-words-spared testimony in which Swift described how Dever DJ David Mueller groped her at a pre-concert meet-and-greet in 2013, she has now won her case against him. (Sample quote from her testimony: “He stayed attached to my bare ass-cheek as I lurched away from him.”) Per The New York Times, an eight-person jury has found that Mueller’s groping equated to assault and battery of Swift.
Swift demanded and was awarded just a single dollar, a symbolic gesture by the pop star. She also announced that she would be donating to organizations that support sexual assault victims in court.
The case had originally been filed by Denver DJ David Mueller in 2015, who claimed that Swift’s allegations had led to his radio station firing him. Swift countersued, alleging assault and battery. (Friday, a judge cited insufficient evidence, dropping Swift from Mueller’s case.)
In a statement, Swift said “I acknowledge the privilege that I benefit from in life, in society and in my ability to shoulder the enormous cost of defending myself in a trial like this. My hope is to help those whose voices should also be heard.”
