Tim Bergling, known by his stage name Avicii, is dead at age 28, according to a statement released by his publicist.
“It is with profound sorrow that we announce the loss of Tim Bergling, also known as Avicii,” the statement reads. “He was found dead in Muscat, Oman this Friday afternoon local time, April 20th. The family is devastated and we ask everyone to please respect their need for privacy in this difficult time. No further statements will be given.”
Avicii was relatively open with the public about his health problems, including the acute pancreatitis he suffered from that stemmed in part from excessive drinking, Billboard reports. He also had his appendix and gallbladder removed in 2014, just two years before announcing his retirement from the industry.
During his brief career, Avicii quickly became well-known in the electronic dance music (EDM) genre and for his work with various artists within the space. The single “Wake Me Up!” from his solo album True climbed to the No. 4 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2013.
Various musicians took to Twitter Friday to pay tribute.

Avicii was a true genre-shifter and someone who saw music as larger than it could be. This is a huge loss and I’m so sad. Rest In Peace.
