The National Portrait Gallery unveiled on Monday two portraits of the former President and First Lady, Barack and Michelle Obama. According to PBS, President Obama’s portrait was painted by Kehinde Wiley, an artist “known for his vibrant, large-scale paintings of African Americans.” The Baltimore-based artist Amy Sherald painted Michelle Obama’s portrait; Sherald won the Portrait Gallery’s 2016 Outwit Boochever Portrait Competition.
Though he didn’t mention President Trump by name, President Obama did tell the audience during the unveiling that he was nostalgic for his time in office.
“We miss you guys,” Obama said. “We miss those who worked with us on this incredible journey carried yourselves and worked so hard to make this country a better place.”
