What medical professionals previously thought was just dense connective tissue is actually a complicated network of fluid-filled, connect compartments. Named the “interstitium,” New Atlas reports that the implications of the discovery are far reaching, as the organ could play a role in the way that cancer metastasizes — the fluid-filled compartments reportedly work as a type of “pre-lymph system, draining fluid into the body’s vital lymphatic systems.”

This discovery brings the total organ count in the human body up to 80, and could knock skin off its top spot as the largest.
