Rick Moranis fans, rejoice: as Deadline reports, the actor is coming out of retirement to star in a Honey, I Shrunk the Kids sequel for Disney simply titled Shrunk.
The movie’s original director Joe Johnston will return for the new film as well, and it will reportedly also star Josh Gad, who will play the son of Moranis’s Wayne Szalinski character. Gad’s character is also an aspiring scientist looking to follow in his dad’s footsteps who accidentally shrinks the kids.
As Deadline notes, the original 1989 movie already has two sequels, Honey, I Blew Up the Kid and the direct-to-video Honey, We Shrunk Ourselves. The first two movies brought in $281 million at the global box office collectively.
Moranis stopped acting on-screen in 1997 to raise his children, but he continued to do voiceover work in the ’00s. The SCTV alum is also slated to appear in Netflix’s upcoming Martin Scorsese-directed documentary, An Afternoon With SCTV, which also features Joe Flaherty, Eugene Levy, Catherine O’Hara, Andrea Martin, Martin Short and Dave Thomas.
There’s no word yet on when Shrunk is scheduled to hit theaters, but it will be produced by Mandeville Films and Television and written by Todd Rosenberg.
