Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger landed in the middle of political news cycle by sending a message to voters on Monday urging them to vote in the upcoming midterm elections.
The “Miracle on the Hudson” pilot, who safely landed a commercial plane in New York City’s Hudson River, said in an op-ed for The Washington Post that he “witnessed the best in people” on that day — Jan. 15, 2009 — but the political climate of America in 2018, to him, “is not the America I know and love.”
Sullenberger’s words seemed to criticize President Trump and other Republican leaders who are not projecting the best that America has to offer as a nation.
“Many are cowardly, complicit enablers, acting against the interests of the United States, our allies and democracy; encouraging extremists at home and emboldening our adversaries abroad; and threatening the livability of our planet,” the Air Force veteran wrote. “Many do not respect the offices they hold; they lack — or disregard — a basic knowledge of history, science and leadership; and they act impulsively, worsening a toxic political environment.”
Sully is a registered Republican but has, as he put it, “always voted as an American.”
