When South African paddle boarder James Taylor came across an injured giant squid in the waters off the coast of Melkbosstrand, he behaved like it was just another day at the beach.
Observe:
Is Taylor an actual direct descendant of Captain Ahab, as we first thought? No. It turns out he had an actual motive for staying cool.
There’s no way to tell from the footage, but the squid was badly hurt and covered in bite marks when Taylor and his friends found it, so they decided to take it to shore for researchers to observe. But by the time they reached the beach, the animal was too far gone and the group decided to put it out of its misery, according to a Facebook post.
Somewhat of a sad ending to an entertaining video, but it does help explain why Taylor — who knew he wasn’t being threatened — was able to behave like he had iced saltwater in his veins.
