Kayaker Gets Slapped In The Face By A Seal With An Octopus

Kyle Mulinder and his friends had been watching the seal tussle with the octopus before it hit him.

A kayaker paddling around the waters in New Zealand had the rare experience of getting hit in the face with an octopus, which was being held in the mouth of a seal.

Kyle Mulinder and friends were enjoying a clear day on the water when they saw a seal tussling with a large octopus near their kayaks. Then, the seal burst out of the water with the creature in its mouth.

“We were just sitting out in the middle of the ocean and then this huge male seal appeared with an octopus and he was thrashing him about for ages,” Mulinder told Australia’s Seven News. “I was like ‘mate, what just happened?’ It was weird because it happened so fast but I could feel all the hard parts of the octopus on my face.”

Mulinder works for Go Pro and had a camera attached to his boat, which caught the whole exchange. On Instagram, he wrote, “I’m not sure who got more of a surprise the seal, the octopus or me.” He went on to say that the octopus hung on the bottom of his kayak for a while before his guide was able to get it off with his paddle.

Wrong place, right time. ? Yes I got slapped in the face with an octopus by the seal! I know crazy right. Here’s the story. Last weekend I was out testing the new #GoProHero7 with @kaikourakayaks and my mate @taiyomasuda. After a fun paddle around the peninsula catching waves we spotted a giant male seal fighting an octopus. Before we knew it the fight came to us and well the rest is slap to the face ? I’m not sure who got more of a surprise the seal, the octopus or me. Either way the octopus held onto the bottom of kayak for some time before our guide was able to get it off with his paddle then it swam away to fight another day. True story. #GoPro #Kaikoura #Hero7Black #GoProANZ
