Jordan Peele terrified audiences with his racially-charged thriller, Get Out, but his second film, Us, is receiving raves and promises that the director somehow managed to “double down” on the scary.
“It’s like Get Out on steroids,” producer Jason Blum told Variety at Wednesday’s African American Film Critics Association Awards.
The trailer for Us, which stars Lupita Nyong’o and Winston Duke as parents who desperately try to keep their children safe from the family’s murderous doppelgängers, occupied a prime spot during the ceremony.
Blum, who partnered with Peele on both of the writer/producer/director’s feature films praised Peele for his commitment to horror — a genre in which Blum is familiar through his contributions to the “Paranormal Activity” and “Insidious” franchises.
“He’s incredibly generous and just wildly gifted,” Blum said. “What’s really special about Jordan is, he didn’t have a big success in ‘Get Out’ and jump out of horror. He doubled down on scary with ‘Us,’ which obviously made me very happy.”
Us premiers in theaters on March 21.
