The horror movie genre has come a long way since the 1800s. Case and point: The short film The Dancing Skeleton, which frightened audiences in 1897, features a skeleton dancing the world’s least-creepy jig. But early attempts at scaring moviegoers paved the way for bigger frights like 1973’s The Exorcist, 1980’s The Shining, and even 2016’s The Witch. Watch the 12-minute “A History of Horror” below to see just how far the genre has come.
