Google CEO Sundar Pichai sent a company-wide email on Thursday saying the company fired 48 employees accused of sexual harassment over the last two years in the wake of a bombshell New York Times report that blasted the tech giant for shielding — and even rewarding — employees who faced investigations.
None of those ousted employees received severance packages, Pichai’s email said, according to Variety, and 13 of them were “senior managers and above.”
The Time’s report claimed that Google protected and rewarded high-ranking executives, like Android creator Andy Rubin, who walked away with $90 million in severance after he was asked to resign amid allegations he coerced an employee to perform oral sex on him.
“We are dead serious about making sure we provide a safe and inclusive workplace,” Pichai wrote in his letter that was cosigned by Google’s Human Resources chief, Eileen Naughton. “We want to assure you that we review every single complaint about sexual harassment or inappropriate conduct, we investigate and we take action.”
