If you haven’t been to middle school lately, it’s easy to forget what a nightmarish landscape the school cafeteria can be.
Who to sit with? Who not to sit with? And that oily terror of sitting on your own.
For Leah Paske, it’s a familiar sensation. She’s long since graduated from middle school, but her son Bo is in sixth grade (as we recall it, the most nightmarish of all possible cafeteria nightmare scenarios) at Montford Middle School in Tallahassee, Florida. Bo Paske is autistic. “It’s one of my daily questions for him. Who did you eat lunch with today? Sometimes the answer is a classmate, but most days it’s nobody,” Leah wrote on Facebook.
Bo came home from school this week with an unexpected response: Florida State wide receiver Travis Rudolph, who noticed the boy sitting by himself and sat down with him. A friend of Leah Paske’s captured the moment; the Internet being what it is, the news soon spread wide and far.
“I’m not sure what exactly made this incredibly kind man share a lunch table with my son, but I’m happy to say that it will not soon be forgotten,” read the post.
As for Rudolph, Paske’s Facebook post nearly brought him to tears. “Honestly [Bo’s] a cool person. I’ll hang out with him any day,” he told a local TV station.
