Every year Travel + Leisure editors look at thousands of hotel openings and renovations around the globe with one goal in mind: what properties are going to be amazing for their readers to visit. The editors look at the location, design and service, but also, the hotel’s “buzz factor.” They write that a standout hotel might be adding to the fabric of a neighborhood by hosting events, or it might offer exclusive excursions, like helicopter safaris. The editors put together a list of 100 properties and then ask for firsthand accounts and make sure to focus on the small details: the softness of the sheets or the niceness of the dishware. Finally, they settle on 56 stunning hotels in places all over the world, like New York City, Madagascar, and Paris. Some of the hotels are old that have undergone renovations, while others are brand new.
For example, the Paris Hotel de Crillon is an 18th-century grand dame that reopened last July under new management after a four-year closure. The hotel has “gilded friezes, pattered marble, and frescoed ceilings that are classified landmarks.” But now it also features modern accents “like low-slung tubular sofas, tables inlaid with semiprecious minerals, and grey and neutral tones.” Then there’s a new hotel in London, The Ned, that is equally as vibrant, with a bar that hosts regular cabaret performances and is home to eight restaurants. Rwanda’s first luxury safari accommodation, the Wilderness Safaris Bisate Lodge, is remarkable. It is a six-villa ecolodge that organizes trekking tours in the corners of Volcanoes National Park.
