The e-truck you see above has a very distinct advantage over Tesla’s forthcoming pickup:
It’s already here.
Unveiled at the Advanced Clean Transportation Expo in Long Beach, the W-15 Electric Pickup Truck runs on Panasonic lithium-ion batteries that provide it with an all-electric range of 80 miles (it also has a gas-powered engine to extend its touring capabilities). Made from carbon fiber composite, the all-wheel-drive truck can do 0-60 in 5.5 seconds and has a horsepower output of 460. It also has an outlet that can supply power tools with juice even when the truck isn’t on, which should squash any dispute about the usefulness of an e-pickup.
Priced at $52,500 before tax breaks, the truck is an investment — but one that should pay off over time, according to company CEO Steve Burns. “For the first time in 108 years, someone has invented a truck that’s cheaper than a gasoline truck over its life,” he told Wired.
Workhorse is taking preorders for the trucks now, and hopes to start production by next year.
Your move, Tesla.
