Lambo CEO Says Urus “Will Be the Fastest SUV”

This one’s made to break some rules.

Sometimes you need a car that can ford a river while making exceptionally good time — a situation that undoubtedly calls for the world’s fastest SUV.

But which is it? The Porsche Cayenne Turbo S? The Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT? The Bentley Bentayga, with a top speed of around 187 MPH?

None of the above, says Lamborghini CEO Stephan Winkelmann, who, perhaps unsurprisingly, is voting for one of his own cars: the upcoming Lamborghini Urus. “It will be the fastest SUV for sure,” Winkelmann said at the Qatar launch of the Huracán LP580-2. “In terms of top speed, in terms of acceleration, in terms of everything. It has to be, it’s a Lamborghini.”

That’s not all the Urus news. Winkelmann suggested the car will have a twin-turbocharged V8 engine, as well as the post-launch option of a hybrid powertrain. “The car we have at launch, the V-8 turbo, will be all about performance,” Winkelmann told Car and Driver. “The other one will be more about reduction of emissions than absolute performance.”

Expect the Urus to appear in showrooms in late 2018, at around $200,000.
