Even supercar makers aren’t immune to salesman gimmicks. When the difference between one six-figure exotic and the next is a tenth of a second on the 0-60 stopwatch, you need a more enticing pitch, something the average Joe (well, millionaire Joe) can get excited about. Koenigsegg has its volcano fuel, De Tomaso is championing the no-screens movement and for the last few years McLaren has been eyeing the parking lot at the links.
When McLaren unveiled its GT model in 2019, the British supercar maker said it was redefining the grand tourer. In essence, buyers could get a roadgoing speed demon in the same family as the storied F1, but one they could actually drive on a daily basis (and drive over potholes without incurring thousands of dollars of damage). However, the feature that was highlighted in every single review of the car was a seemingly pedestrian one: it could fit a full bag of golf clubs in the back.
This talking point is such a priority for the brand that buyers have the option to add a custom golf bag (as part of a four-piece, GT-specific luggage set), one that’s “assembled by the highest quality craftsmen in Italy,” to their vehicle purchase. But even if you’ve already got a grass-stained lucky charm you’re unwilling to let go of, car YouTuber Doug DeMuro made sure you could fit a regular, non-McLaren-made set in the back in his review of the so-called grand tourer.
If it looks like a gimmick and sounds like a gimmick, it’s probably a gimmick. But in the McLaren GT’s case, the sales pitch of “the golfer’s supercar” is in truth the ideal entry point into discovering everything that gives the GT a more impressive title: “the driver’s supercar.” As in, the supercar for someone who actually intends to put miles on this thing, instead of simply placing it in a trophy case and breaking it out for red carpets and photo-ops.
And because it’s an exotic that the general public can feel comfortable with when they get behind the wheel, that makes it the ideal supercar to enter for a chance to win through Omaze’s current giveaway. That’s right, through July 22, Omaze is accepting entries into a sweepstakes for a brand new 2022 McLaren GT, all in support of the Make-A-Wish Foundation of America.
The McLaren GT lies at the intersection of unbridled automotive extravagance, which is what you’re paying for when you buy a supercar, and actual usability. (There’s a reason there are so many “Supercar Fail” videos on the internet, because most of these machines are not built to be driven by regular people on regular roads.)
In the back behind the two seats, the generous luggage bay offers 15 cubic feet of storage (where the clubs go) and a front trunk offers another five cubic feet, but above you there’s an astonishing electrochromic panoramic roof that cycles through shade from transparent to opaque with a simple swipe. It features a seven-speed automatic transmission, which means it’s a simple machine to get acquainted with, but its twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 engine produces 612 horsepower and can shoot you from 0-60 mph in 3.1 seconds, and up to 203 mph, if you so choose. But honestly, the exhaust notes at lower speeds paired with the award-winning Bowers & Wilkins audio setup should be enough for anyone who doesn’t want to be featured in the aforementioned videos.
So no, you don’t need to be a golfer to enjoy the luxurious ride and unfathomable power of the McLaren GT. You could be a skier, a hockey player or a metal detectorist, or even someone who doesn’t have a hobby with gear that will fill the entire length of the luggage compartment. Whichever category you fall under, if you want to enjoy the driver’s supercar currently being given away by Omaze, you can donate to support a great cause and enter for a chance to win it. But as the company notes, no donation or payment is necessary to enter or win this sweepstakes.
If you want this incredible McLaren sitting in your driveway, making you the envy of the neighborhood, enter here. The deadline to enter is July 22, 2022 at 11:59 p.m., Pacific Standard Time. The winner will be announced around August 10.
