Author Francine Prose‘s father used to warn her to avoid traveling to places she’d already been—especially when she was younger. His argument was a valid one: Over time, these spots change, and you’ll ultimately wind up disappointed.

Instead of heeding his advice, she ventured back to the island of Sicily—a place she’d covered for The New York Times in 1992 and circled back to in 2002—and wrote this first-person essay on experiencing it once again, nearly 25 years after her first visit.
