On Thursday morning Warner Bros. Pictures released the first official trailer for The Matrix Resurrections, the fourth live-action movie in The Matrix series and first new entry since 2003. While lacking the inventiveness of the teasers released earlier this week — all 180,000 of them — the trailer offers up plenty of nods to the first few films while adding in some new wrinkles.
Who is returning this time around? Actors Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss and Jada Pinkett Smith, along with director Lana Wachowski. Who is out? Co-creator and former co-director Lilly Wachowski, along with franchise stars Hugo Weaving and Laurence Fishburne. Prominent new additions? While you might suggest new roles by the likes of Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Jessica Henwick, Jonathan Groff, Neil Patrick Harris, Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Christina Ricci, I say the addition of British novelist David Mitchell (Cloud Atlas) as a co-screenwriter portends good things ahead.
The new trailer is a mishmash of red pills and blue pills, insane action sequences and a lot of “is this real/do we know each other” kind of talk. And lots of allusions to Alice in Wonderland. Anyway, watch it below:
As of now, The Matrix Resurrections plans to follow other Warner Bros. releases and debut in theaters and, for one mont, on HBO Max starting on Dec. 22.
