Brendan Fraser was among the brightest stars of the ‘90s, then he disappeared, and now he’s back with a string of prestige TV performances. A new profile of Fraser in GQ examines what happened in the intervening decade, a time of turbulence and sadness for the famously-amiable leading man. Following a run of physically-punishing blockbusters ranging from George of the Jungle to The Mummy, Fraser required multiple surgeries and spent seven years in and out of the hospital. He went through a divorce and the death of his mother in the 2000s. Fraser also opened up about a 2003 incident in which, Fraser alleges, former Hollywood Foreign Press Association president Philip Berk groped him, a traumatic experience that made him retreat somewhat from public life. Now, Fraser is in a better place. He garnered acclaim for his supporting role on The Affair, and is gearing up for FX’s John Paul Getty III series, Trust.
