What happens when the ferries used to transport people from the southern tip of Manhattan to the northern tip of Staten Island reach the end of their active service? As it turns out, two of the borough’s best-known figures are teaming up for a very on-brand venture involving one such vessel.
Both Pete Davidson and Colin Jost hail from the city’s southernmost borough, and both have made light of that fact on the current season of Saturday Night Live. Davidson’s musical ode to Staten Island and Jost being on the receiving end of a robot’s jokes about the borough both made for high points of the show in the last year; clearly, the logical place to go involves co-owning a ferry-turned-venue there.
NBC News reports that Jost and Davidson, in collaboration with The Stand co-founder Paul Italia, purchased a decommissioned ferry for $280,100. Their plans involve turning it into a space for live entertainment; relevant to this discussion is Italia’s experience with The Stand, which has booked comedians for the last seven years.
The boat in question — the John F. Kennedy NYC Staten Island Ferry — is 277 feet long, and the buyers have 10 days to pick it up from the NYC Department of Citywide Administrative Services. As for where the ferry will find a permanent home, that remains to be seen.
