After nearly 30 years on the air, the entertainment news show E! News has been canceled as a result of financial hardship due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The show, which premiered in 1991 and has been hosted by the likes of Ryan Seacrest, Giuliana Rancic and Maria Menounos over the years, was axed along with E!’s Pop of the Morning and In the Room as a result of cutbacks at the network. Current host Lilliana Vazquez addressed the cancellation in an Instagram post.
“See. I have placed before you an open door that no one can shut. Revelations 3:8,” she wrote.”Thankful for this incredible adventure and I will miss this team and crew beyond belief. Yes…even the 4am call time. Con mucho mucho amor. ”
Vasquez, Victor Cruz and Scott Tweedie also served as hosts of Pop of the Morning. CNN reports that “although the namesake show will no longer be on air, the E! News network shows Daily Pop and Nightly Pop will still be filmed and aired out of LA, and E!’s website and social media accounts will still be active.”
The move comes as part of a larger restructuring at parent company NBCUniversal. On Tuesday, the media company announced company-wide layoffs.
“A few months ago, we combined our television and streaming businesses under Mark Lazarus, which will allow us to more rapidly shift our resources and investment from linear to streaming,” CEO Jeff Shell said on an earnings call last week. “Mark is finalizing a new structure that will demonstrate the unique way we intend to manage this business going forward. We will announce the structure soon.”
