Bret Easton Ellis and Irvine Welsh have reportedly teamed up for an upcoming satirical drama series about tabloid press culture in America under UK producer Burning Wheel Productions.
Currently known under the working title American Tabloid, the new series will reportedly follow life at a splashy weekly publication with little regard for ethics and political correctness, examining the corrupt side of American media as the story unfolds over multiple decades.
Producers said Ellis and Welsh are in final talks on the deal, and production is set to begin shortly, according to Deadline.
“To do this production justice, we always knew we would require writers who don’t hold back and go way further than most would dare,” Burning Wheel’s Shelley Hammond said in a statement. “We are beyond delighted that we are ready to agree a deal to make this happen with the incredible talent of Bret and Irvine. This would be the first time the two have collaborated professionally – and with the support to allow creative freedom, we are confident spectacular things will happen.”
Burning Wheel previously partnered with Welsh on the Danny Boyle-produced Creation Stories, about the life of Creation Records co-founder Alan McGee.
