Two months into Tim Tebow’s tenure with the minor league Binghamton Rumble Ponies, the athlete has been welcomed by the small upstate city.

If experts think it would take a miracle for the religious Christian sports hero and former NFL quarterback to make it to the big leagues with the Mets, there are plenty of believers in Binghamton, according to The New York Daily News.

After all, at 29 and with 11 years away from the sport before the Mets signed him, the odds are against him cracking a major league lineup.

But it’s clear that the .242 hitter’s life, even this far removed from the media center of New York City to the south, is nothing like that of a regular minor leaguer. Last week, he addressed a crowd of more than 1,100 young parishioners at the First Baptist Church of Johnson City.

“Excitement doesn’t begin to describe what Nona Williams is feeling as she spots Tebow pop out of the dugout following the game wearing a short sleeve blue Adidas shirt with all three buttons done up to the collar and a black leather Adidas cap tilted slightly on his head,” writes The News‘s Julian Garcia.

“With her two young children by her side, one of them holding a sign with the biblical verse John 3:16 written on it, Williams rushes to the front row of seats, where Tebow signs an autograph and seems genuinely enthusiastic as Williams tells him she homeschools her children just like Tebow was homeschooled by his parents.”
