As anyone who has been in one can attest, the key to preserving any longstanding relationship, especially after it has hit a rough patch, is compromise.
It looks like the NFL has apparently been getting some counseling as the league has reportedly revised its national anthem policy in a way that compromises with the wishes of its protesting players.
Under the terms of the policy, players will be given the choice to stay in the locker room or be on the sidelines when the anthem is played.
However, if they choose to come out for the song, they must stand as “respecting the anthem will be paramount” and teams will be fined if a player or any other team personnel do not demonstrate appropriate respect.
Individual teams will also be able to set their own policies and will have the option to fine players or other personnel for disrespectful infractions.
“We were not consulted ahead of this meeting on any potential changes to the anthem policy,” NFL Players Association assistant executive director of external affairs George Atallah said in a statement. “If there are changes to the policy that put players in a position where they could be disciplined or fined, we are going to do what we always do — fight anything that encroaches on players’ rights to the end.”
