While speaking to ESPN about the prospect of his former team selecting Baker Mayfield at No. 3 overall, ex-New York Jet Joe Namath called Mayfield the “most outrageous” quarterback in his class.
“When I see his quick feet and I see him throwing every which way, I see the accuracy, I see the intensity, his hustle,” Namath said. “Hey, I tell you, I wouldn’t want to play against him. I didn’t want Alabama to play against him.”
Based on those comments, it sounds like Namath would be in favor of New York selecting Mayfield over quarterbacks Josh Allen, Sam Darnold, Josh Rosen or Lamar Jackson if they get the chance.
The thing is, if rumors that began circulating Tuesday bear out, the Jets won’t have the chance.
According to reports from NFL insiders Dan Patrick, Adam Schefter and Dustin Fox, the Cleveland Browns are giving a good deal of thought to selecting Mayfield at No. 1 overall.
It had previously been presumed they’d be taking either Allen or Darnold with the top pick.
“So take it with a major grain of salt that Mayfield is in the conversation. But don’t discount it: everyone is in the conversation at No. 1,” according to Will Brinson of CBS Sports. “There isn’t a slam dunk here. Some people think it should be Darnold, and some think it will be Darnold. The same can be said for Allen and Mayfield.”
