Kobe Bryant has an Oscar, but he won’t have a place in the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences.
On Wednesday, the Academy’s governors committee voted to overrule a membership committee’s recommendation that Bryant be allowed into the film academy following his Academy Award win for the animated short Dear Basketball.
Bryant, who wrote and narrated the film, apparently doesn’t have enough experience for admission and the governors committee felt he needed evidence of a larger career in film before being admitted.
It’s also possible that Bryant’s involvement in a 2003 sexual assault case – which was dropped criminally and settled out of court civilly – played a part in the decision.
The final call on who will be invited to join the Academy this year will be made on Saturday.
