Thanks to the violence of soccer fans, “The Game of the Century” between Argentine squads Boca Juniors and River Plate will be played outside of Argentina.
Where exactly that will be, however, has yet to be determined.
Countries including Brazil, Italy, Paraguay, and the U.S. have volunteered to host the second leg of the Copa Libertadores after it had to be canceled in Argentina after River fans attacked players on the Boca team bus with tear gas.
While the venue is still up in the air, South American organizer CONMEBOL has decided the postponed second leg be played December 8 or 9. It’s possible the stadium where the match is played will be closed to the public.
The time off will give Boca’s players time to recover from the attack as well as let tempers cool across the squads and their fan bases.
The first leg of the highly anticipated derby between the Buenos Aires archrivals finished 1-1.
“Football is not about violence, it is decided with goals,” said CONMEBOL president Alejandro Dominguez. “Football is not what we saw on the weekend. That is a disease that needs to be eradicated.”
