You might call this “CNBC: Frenemy Edition.”
CNBC’s Bob Pisani nabbed a rare, dual interview with recent Miami Marlins buyer Derek Jeter and his former New York Yankees teammate Alex Rodriguez at the annual BTIG Charity Day event yesterday.
Though one would expect it to be a happy reunion, things got awkward quickly, as Pisani brought up Jeter and A-Rod’s feud, then mistakenly called Jeter “Alex.” To make matters worse, Pisani then brought up Rodriguez’s date at the Met Gala the previous night, Jennifer Lopez, which prompted Jeter to ask, “What channel is this?” (Rodriguez, clearly embarrassed, didn’t respond to the question.) Pisani then tried to smooth things over by asking Jeter about his charity work, which trailed off into nervous laughter between the two players.
Doing his due diligence as a journalist, Pisani also brought up the Marlins deal, which Jeter didn’t appear too pleased about. “There’s nothing to add here,” said Jeter. “The media ran with the story, but there’s nothing to add.” Unbelievably, Pisani persisted, dropping the reported $1.3 billion price-tag on a bewildered Jeter. What happened next?
