McLaren’s Next Hypercar Is Going to Be a Three-Seater

Reason no. 347 to have an only child

We can hear the conversations now.

“But dear, there is room for a carseat in the back.”

The McLaren “Hyper-GT” three-seat hypercar is officially happening.

Scheduled delivery date: 2019. It’s touted to be the most luxurious make they’ve released to date, borrowing a three-seat layout with central driving position from the legendary McLaren F1. And it’ll be “housed in a streamlined, shrink-wrapped carbon fibre body of great elegance,” according to McLaren CEO Mike Flewitt. Yeah, because McLaren has historically been known for their bulky, unwieldy plastic boxcars.

The makers want to be clear that the Hyper-GT is more than your everyday hypercar. Codenamed BP23 (for “Bespoke Project 2” — not a character from Star Wars), the 246-MPH-capable ride will be just as useful for long road trips as it is Sundays at the track.

“We are calling BP23 a ‘Hyper-GT’ because it’s a car designed for longer journeys, but with the high levels of performance and driver engagement expected of any McLaren. A hybrid powertrain will make it one of the most powerful McLarens yet created but the car will also deliver the highest levels of refinement, enabling significant journeys to be undertaken with up to three people aboard,” according to the release.

Sooo, it’s basically a family car.

Like the F1, McLaren will only make 106 Hyper-GTs, and buyers will work with the manufacturer to choose custom interior and exterior colors, trim and specialized switchgear. You should head over here to Autocar to see the rendering of what an F1 successor might look like. No, really, you should.

Because all 106 BP23s have been sold, and that’s likely as close as we’re all going to get.
