Finally! A Way to Keep Spammers From Calling Your Phone.

Insurance scams and political robocalls, be gone

July 26, 2016 9:00 am

Your days of calls from that mysterious 859 area code are over.

Starting now, the Google Phone app will warn users about incoming calls from listed numbers that might be spam. This notification is available immediately when you update your phone.

You can also block and report spam calls, as well as report calls as spam that aren’t initially listed as such (and vice versa).

It’s not all good news: As the announcement notes, “To use caller ID & spam protection, your phone may need to send information about your calls to Google.” (Who, if they were ironic, would sell your info back to spam callers. Let’s hope they’re not ironic.)

Plus, it’s not a solution for iOS fans: the app is currently only available for Nexus and Android One devices. (Meanwhile, Apple is doing a rather poor job on coming up with any usable anti-spam solution.)

Bonus solution? Never answer the phone.
