One would think that an actor who is still less than a year removed from accidentally killing someone on the set of his movie might try to steer clear of any other potential controversy. And yet, that doesn’t appear to be the case for Alec Baldwin, who on Sunday announced that he plans to interview director and accused child molester Woody Allen on Instagram Live later this week.
Baldwin posted a video message teasing his interview with Allen, which will take place at 10:30 a.m. ET on June 28. “Let me preface this by stating that I have ZERO INTEREST in anyone’s judgments and sanctimonious posts here,” he captioned the Instagram post. “I am OBVIOUSLY someone who has my own set of beliefs and COULD NOT CARE LESS about anyone else’s speculation. If you believe that a trial should be conducted by way of an HBO documentary, that’s your issue.”
That is, of course, a reference to the recent HBO docuseries Allen v. Farrow, which featured new interviews from Mia Farrow and her daughter Dylan Farrow, who claims Allen sexually assaulted her in 1992 when she was just seven years old. (Allen has vehemently denied the allegations for decades now. He declined to be interviewed for Allen v. Farrow.)
Baldwin has worked with Allen on multiple occasions (including 1990’s Alice , 2012’s To Rome with Love and 2013’s Blue Jasmine) and has been one of the director’s staunchest defenders. But just in case there was any doubt about where his allegiances lie, he made it clear in his video post: “I love you, Woody,” he said. “Instagram, I’m with Woody, Tuesday, 10:30. Be there.”
Sitting down for a defiant interview with someone who has been accused of pedophilia is a pretty bold move for Baldwin at this particular moment in his career. In fact, he seems determined to squander any remaining goodwill he has at a time when he needs it the most. He’s currently being sued for wrongful death by the family of Halyna Hutchins, the cinematographer he unintentionally shot on the set of Rust; given that, you’d think he’d want to lay low and avoid any further negative attention. And he’s not quite out of the woods yet when it comes to any potential criminal charges, either: the investigation into Hutchins’s death is still ongoing, and Santa Fe County District Attorney Mary Carmack-Altwies says Baldwin has not yet been cleared of charges.
