In the last year, no less than four artists have acted as both host and musical guest for Saturday Night Live. This week found Jack Harlow in both roles just two weeks after Megan Thee Stallion did the same. Harlow brought a lot of enthusiasm to the show, along with a willingness to run with various concepts.

This episode’s proximity to Halloween resulted in a few seasonally-appropriate sketches, including one about drunken partygoers and a horror movie trailer about the 2024 election. Another sketch found three people at a haunted prison ride — played by Harlow, Ego Nwodim and Andrew Dismukes — encountering a man clad in an orange and black suit, accompanied by a pair of skeletons.

Just over six years since the character first appeared on the show, Tom Hanks revisited David S. Pumpkins, with SNL alum Bobby Moynihan back for the sketch as well. (Moynihan also turned up later in the episode, uttering the indelible phrase, “Could you Minecraft my metaverse, please?”)

There are some SNL follow-up sketches that are content to hit the same beats as their predecessor, and this is one of them. But it is an endearingly weird formula, and Hanks’s madcap glee here is hard to resist — as is Kenan Thompson making bad horror-themed puns.
