A new reboot of The Wonder Years that reimagines the Arnolds as a Black family living in Alabama has landed a pilot production commitment at ABC, according to Variety.
As the publication notes, “The new half-hour comedy series would focus on how a black middle class family in Montgomery, Alabama in the turbulent late 1960s made sure it was The Wonder Years for them too. That puts the new show in the same time period as the original series, which was set between 1968 and 1973. A mini writer’s room for the show will be opened once ABC approves a pilot script.”
Lee Daniels and Marc Velez will executive produce via Lee Daniels Entertainment, and Fred Savage, who famously played Kevin Arnold on the original series, will direct the pilot episode and executive produce as well. Neal Marlens, the co-creator of the original Wonder Years series, will also serve as consultant.
There’s no word yet on a potential cast or when the pilot is expected to shoot. The Wonder Years originally aired on ABC from 1988 to 1993 and won four Emmys, a Golden Globe, a Peabody Award and multiple Humanitas Prizes over the course of its run.
