CC Sabathia Is Now Playing Fast-Pitch Softball in Central Park

These Warriors do, in fact, come out and play

What are the odds that you’ll see a high-profile athlete playing sports in a public park somewhere in New York City? Not terribly high, to be honest. There’s Steve Nash’s annual street soccer tournament, which draws a mixture of soccer players and people known for their skill at other sports — but that only happens once a year. As it turns out, though, this year has made those odds a whole lot better.

Why? Because former Yankees pitcher CC Sabathia is now playing for a fast-pitch softball team called the Warriors in Central Park. A detailed article by Joe DeLessio at Curbed explains how this situation came about, and it’s actually pretty charming.

“Playing softball in Central Park was like a bucket-list thing, and getting to do it with my buddies is even more fun,” Sabathia told Curbed. Among his teammates are his R2C2 co-host Ryan Ruocco and Matt Siegel, formerly of the YES Network.

DeLessio notes that the quality of play in this league is still pretty high, as far as recreational softball leagues go, with many of the players having played baseball in college. As for Sabathia, he seems to be doing pretty well, both holding it down at first base and firing home runs into the distance.

It’s the story of a guy looking to play softball in the park with his friends. That the guy in question is a six-time MLB All-Star and a potential Hall of Fame inductee doesn’t change the broad strokes of the story. Sometimes, you just want to play softball with your friends.
