It builds on work Koons did for BMW's Art Car program

It’s not uncommon to hear an especially well-designed or well-made car described as a work of art. That’s not the only place where the world of fine art and vehicular design come together; the Museum of Modern Art recently hosted Automania, a show dedicated to “[e]xamining automobiles as both modern industrial products and style icons.” And BMW’s Art Car program has sought out collaborations with a host of prominent artists — including Roy Lichtenstein, Jenny Holzer and David Hockney.

Now, the Art Car program has added a new wrinkle: onetime Art Car participant Jeff Koons has created a new design that will see a limited run from BMW. The New York Times reports that BMW announced the plan as part of the Frieze Los Angeles art fair.

The 8 x Jeff Koons, as the collaboration is known, was described by the automaker as “the most elaborately designed vehicle in all of BMW’s history.” And, based on a quote Koons provided to the Times, this new design first emerged when he was working on his Art Car in 2010.

All told, 99 cars in this new collaboration — a version of the M850i xDrive Gran Coupé — will be produced. As the Times noted in their article, there is some precedent for this, including a limited-run collaboration between BMW and Futura.

The 8 x Jeff Koons will cost $350,000 each, and one will be on display in New York City from late March through April 5. This model will be auctioned off, with proceeds benefiting the International Center for Missing and Exploited Children.
