Opening nationwide today, Assassination Nation is hitting theaters with an R-rating for “disturbing bloody violence, strong sexual material including menace, pervasive language, and for drug and alcohol use — all involving teens.”
That rating should make it clear that, despite being based around a set of high school girlfriends dealing with the fallout of a wave of anonymous data hacks in their small town, Sam Levinson’s dark satire is far from an after-school special.
The quartet at the center of the film – Lily (Odessa Young), Bex (Hari Nef), Sarah (Suki Waterhouse) and Em (Abra) – hunt for the hacker who exposed the town’s secrets (with Bella Thorne’s Reagan playing a part) and, as the R-rating’s description suggests, things get bloody.
So bloody in fact that the film’s distributor reportedly had issues placing ads for the movie on both social media and traditional billboards, so you might not have heard a lot about it.
But, given that Young, Nef, Waterhouse, Abra, and Thorne are involved, we thought you’d like to know about the film and its stars.
Here’s the trailer and then let’s meet the killer crew.

What you know her from: In addition to appearing in Insurgent and The Bad Batch, Waterhouse has her own direct-to-consumer accessories brand, Pop & Suki, that she co-founded with her best friend Poppy Jamie. Waterhouse also dated Bradley Cooper for more than a year.
